Prairie Horticulture Certificate (PHC) Program Overview
- PHC is offered through a consortium of four Western Canadian educational institutions: Assiniboine Community College (Brandon, Manitoba), Olds College (Olds, Alberta), the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and the University of Saskatchewan. Each partner develops and delivers courses in its areas of expertise. At the University of Saskatchewan, the College of Agriculture and Bioresources and CCDE offer PHC jointly.
- Apply for admission through your home institution of choice and once admitted, register for any course offered. All courses taken from participating institutions are treated as if they have been taken at your home institution.
- PHC offers four streams of study: Fruit and Vegetable Production; Greenhouse Crop Production; Landscaping and Arboriculture; and Nursery Crop Production >> learn more
- Courses do not have pre-requisites. You can take them in any order and take as many (or few) as you like. If you are pursuing a certificate, we strongly recommend that you start with Applied Botany and Soils for Horticulture, then complete the required courses and then work your way through the electives.
- PHC is flexibly designed to be a part-time home study program. Expect to work eight to ten hours per week for a six-credit weight course (60 hours) and approximately half that for a three-credit weight course.
- Instructors are available by email and telephone at pre-scheduled times. Once accepted into the program, you will receive a comprehensive course guide. Some courses require textbooks and/or videos. Assignments may submitted by mail, fax or email and are returned to you by mail.
