Grow with us!

From beginning gardeners to Master Gardeners, the University of Saskatchewan Master Gardener Program offers courses and activities to help you grow!

The U of S Master Gardener Program offers a wide variety of horticultural education courses for all levels of gardening ability as well as provides opportunities for you to participate in horticulture related activities or tours on campus and beyond, socialize with equally enthusiastic gardeners, and share your knowledge with others. Our strength is our resources—the instructors who teach our program are trained professionals who specialize in their teaching area, our Master Gardeners who eagerly share their knowledge with one another, and our hands on teaching material and experiences we are able to access through the University network. While our primary focus is to provide high caliber horticultural education, there are also opportunities to attend social events hosted by our Master Gardener group to network with other gardening enthusiasts.

We have two educational streams in our program, the fundamental core courses and the special interest horticulture workshops. All types of courses are offered year round, check our upcoming courses for dates.

Special Interest Workshops: Every year we offer more than 30 special interest courses, tours or events. From our popular Landscape Design series, to Hypertufa, to Basic Perennials, to Organic Gardening, to Rare & Unusual Ornamental Grasses, there is something for every level of gardening ability! Though core courses occur throughout the year, most of the special interest workshops, tours and events are offered during Hort Week.

Core Courses: The seven core courses make up the foundation of our horticulture programming, they provide a solid educational base for all gardeners and are necessary for certification. These courses include horticulture basics such as Botanical Latin, Basic Plant Science, Introduction to Soils plus several more, for a full list check course description  Though the general public is very welcome to attend any of these courses, to become certified as a Master Gardener, you must complete all of the core courses, perform a volunteer "internship", and pass an open book exam for completion of the program. There is no time limit. For more details on becoming a certified U of S Master Gardener, please see here. Each of the core courses is offered at least twice a year and several are available through distance education. The U of S Master Gardener Program is open to anyone. The only prerequisite is an interest in gardening—and enthusiasm. There are no deadlines for registration or for completion of the program.
