Ecology Campus for Kids: Summer 2013
| Camp Name | Dates | Fee | |
| Camp 1 | Bird Banding FULL What’s more fun than holding a baby bird? Your camp director has a federal permit for migratory bird banding and participates in a 40-year study of bluebirds and Tree Swallows nesting in 75 nest boxes on Victor Road from Beaver Creek to Highway 11 south to Dundurn. Children help with the banding process and log the data that goes to the international registry. We’ll help with BCCA MAPS program using mist nets and observe the banding of a large colony of Purple Martins south of town. In the lab we learn about bird anatomy, behavior, migration and identification. The camp includes field trips to grasslands, wetlands and the zoo. |
July 2-5 | $200 |
| Camp 2 | Dinosaur Ecology FULL Our geology museum displays and researchers set us up to learn about dinosaurs, flying and marine reptiles. Our field trips include Herschel to discover plesiosaur fossils emerging from the ground, indigenous peoples petroglyphs and a bison kill site. Near the Saskatoon Natural Grasslands the remains of mammoth tusks and musk ox fossils illustrate our ice age history. Field trips are to SNG, Herschel, Wanuskewin and Pike Lake. |
July 8-12 | $250 |
| Camp 3 | Insect Ecology FULL Do you know the difference between a spider and an insect? We study bugs, beetles, bees, dragonflies, butterflies, moths and spiders and ticks. On field trips we use nets to capture, identify and release. In the lab we study life cycles, identification and visit the Insectarium. Field trips are to SNG, Herschel, Wanuskewin and Pike Lake. |
July 15-19 | $250 |
| Camp 4 | Marine Mammals FULL Our eco-tours take people to learn about polar bears, seals, whales, dolphins, and manatees and see them in their natural habitat. Unfortunately, these habitats are too far for our field trips but we learn about effects on our river draining into Hudson Bay and the Arctic Ocean. In the lab we study food chains and dissect squid. Field trips are to the Zoo, Pike Lake, MVA trail and BCCA to canoe. |
July 22-26 | $250 |
| Camp 5 | Endangered Species FULL Did you know that prairies are the most altered ecosystem? Without habitat there is no wildlife. We study Saskatchewan endangered species and their habitats, how scientists study them and what kids can do at home and at school to help endangered species. |
July 29-August 2 | $250 |
| Camp 6 | Wetland Ecology (4-day camp) FULL Our only four-day camp visits the MVA trail, Pike Lake, Chappell Marsh and the Saskatoon Natural Grasslands. In the lab we identify wetland values, learn about wetland inhabitants and their habits. |
August 6-9 | $200 |
| Camp 7 | Dinosaur Ecology FULL | August 12-16 | $250 |
| Camp 8 | Insect Ecology FULL | August 19-23 | $250 |
| Camp 9 | Marine Mammals FULL | August 26-30 | $250 |
