Program Overview
Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CERTESL)
The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CERTESL) is comprised of six courses including a supervised practicum or professional project. Ideally, it can be completed within 1 to 2 years (part-time study) and could potentially be completed in as little as 8 months (full-time study). If you need more time, with special permission or extend completion, you can take up to 5 years to finish.
Depending on your personal career and travel plans, you can choose a path that trains you to teach in ESL, EFL or ESD settings. Course content covers:
- effective communicative language teaching
- ESL/EFL learner needs assessment and evaluation
- TESL/TEFL lesson planning
- selection and development of TESL/TEFL materials
- English grammar and phonology
If you are already an experienced teacher, you may choose the Professional Project option which lets you conduct TESL research or prepare TESL curriculum materials that will help you in your own professional setting.
If you want to start your CERTESL in a face-to-face classroom setting, check out our on-campus Summer TEFL Intensive Program. Summer TEFL is equivalent to two foundational CERTESL courses and students who pass the Intensive with an average of 60% or better will receive transfer credit into CERTESL, plus a $75 application bursary if they complete their next CERTESL course within one year.
Courses are offered three times per year:
Fall: September to December (apply by August 15)
Winter: January to April (apply by December 15)
Spring & Summer: May to August (International Residents apply by April 1; Canadian Residents by April 15)
To apply, download the CERTESL application form, follow the guidelines, fill it in and mail it to our office with the admission fee enclosed.
